(1) Ask for the Bar Council enrolment number — every genuine advocate has one under Section 24 of the Advocates Act, 1961, and shares it without hesitation. (2) Search that name on eCourts (the district or High Court case-search portal) — a practising advocate leaves a visible trail of case appearances; someone with no appearance history despite claiming years of practice is a red flag. (3) Confirm the Certificate of Practice (COP) is current — since the All India Bar Examination reform, a fresh enrolment only carries provisional practice rights for two years; without clearing AIBE and securing a COP within that window, the licence to practise is suspended, even though the person may still call themselves "a lawyer." Anyone who deflects these three questions is not someone to hand documents or an advance fee to.
