The forum depends on the nature and seriousness of the matter. Serious ("sessions triable") offences and sessions-level bail go before the District & Sessions Judge or an Additional District Judge; most criminal trials, remand and cheque-bounce complaints go before the Magistrates; civil disputes go before the Civil Judges by valuation; and matrimonial matters go before the Family Court. Anticipatory bail is moved before the Court of Session here, and on rejection before the Punjab & Haryana High Court.

Timings, cause lists and case status

The court generally works Monday to Friday, about 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with a lunch break around 1:30-2:00 PM, and is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and gazetted holidays. Daily cause lists and case status are available through the eCourts system by CNR number, case number, party name or advocate name. Certified copies are obtained through the copying agency. The complex is in Sector 12, near Bata Chowk.
