How is a marriage already performed registered in Haryana?
A Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist marriage performed by ceremonies is valid under the Hindu Marriage Act. Registration in Haryana proves it, under the Haryana Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act, 2008. Couples apply with proof of the ceremony, photographs, age and address proof and witnesses. A registered certificate is needed for passports, visas, bank nominations and spouse benefits. Court marriage is also used by couples whose earlier ceremony was not documented.
What protection can couples facing threats get?
Adults have a constitutional right to marry a person of their choice. Couples facing threats from family can approach the police for protection and, where needed, file a protection petition before the Punjab & Haryana High Court, which routinely directs police protection. See protection petitions and court marriage and live-in relationships.
